What is Cheiloplasty?

Cheiloplasty, also known as lip surgery, is an outpatient surgical procedure whose purpose is to correct the shape of the lips. It is a minimally invasive surgery performed under local anesthesia and does not require complex care.

There are three classifications of cheiloplasty. First responders classify by type:

Lip Augmentation Cheiloplasty

It is one of the best-known and most popular treatments and offers excellent results, whether with fillers such as hyaluronic acid or the patient's own fat.

Reduction Cheiloplasty

It is a less demanded procedure, generally requested by patients whose lips are too developed or whose appearance is incompatible with the rest of the face.

Corrective Cheiloplasty

It is the intervention in patients with changes in the lips caused by tumors, trauma, burns or other injuries, as well as congenital changes, for example, cleft lip.

On the other hand, it is determined whether Cheiloplasty is primary or secondary depending on whether the patient has this procedure for the first time or whether there is a corrective intervention for previous treatments.

Secondary Cheiloplasty or Lip Repair Surgery?

Lip augmentation is one of the oldest treatments of aesthetic medicine, and the products used especially in the early periods are permanent products such as the famous silicones. Health in Spain has been controlling the type of implants used for these treatments for years, as most old fillings present different types of complications over the years. Modern temporary fillers are versatile, provide excellent results and are economical.

For this reason, and also because of its tendency to look very natural and healthy, many patients who had lip augmentation with permanent filler years ago request a secondary cheiloplasty to remove the product or correct the shape of the mouth.

Is Cheiloplasty Intervention Painful?

Although it is a simple surgical intervention, local anesthesia is applied to make the patient more comfortable. In some cases, local anesthesia with sedation may be required. The decision on the type of anesthesia will depend on the medical team, the patient's preferences, and the patient's overall health. An analysis is requested prior to intervention for a full assessment.

What is Lip Surgery?

It is an outpatient treatment and does not require hospitalization.

In the first phase, the medical team will make a full diagnosis, examine your wishes and needs and the state of your general health. Pre-treatment photos will be taken. Once all documents are completed, informed consent is signed, and subsequent care is explained, the treatment phase will begin.

During the treatment, the area to be treated will be cleaned and disinfected. The doctor will mark the lines of intervention based on the diagnosis, the type of cheiloplasty, and the patient's goals. Anesthesia will be administered in the next step. Depending on the type of lip surgery, the intervention will progress and in case of reduction or correction, incisions will be made from the inside of the lip, the necessary product or tissue will be removed, and then stitches will be applied.
